Mahmoud Traina, MD

Dr. Mahmoud Traina is Vice Chairman of the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute (HVTI)and Section Head of Interventional Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD). He is also a Full Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. As the director of the Structural Heart Program at CCAD, Dr. Traina has established the premier structural heart program in the UAE and one of the leading programs in the region. Under his leadership, the program has grown exponentially, and is performing over 300 cases annually, over 75% of the cases performed in the UAE overall. The published outcomes of TAVR place the center in the 95 th percentile of centers worldwide.

Dr. Traina has been actively involved in education and is the educational lead at HVTI. He was the Program Director of the first fellowship established at CCAD in cardiovascular medicine, He has led the HVTI efforts in providing education to the community, including directing 3 regional conferences at CCAD, 9 3-day preceptorship programs, 2 annual 6 session webinar series, and ongoing internal CME programs. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Traina was an Associate Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), California, US. He was also Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center and the Associate Program Director of the Cardiology fellowship at UCLA, overseeing the training of over thirty fellows annually. He is known as a dedicated educator and has won several teaching awards.

Dr. Traina’s current research interests include optimization of structural heart techniques and exploring regional differences in coronary artery disease and structural heart presentations. He has participated in multiple international multicenter trials and has over sixty publications and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals. He is considered a leading expert in interventional cardiology and is a regularly invited speaker at both national and international conferences.
